Romanian Designer Belinda Liu Returns to London Fashion Week with Her Classic Feminine Designs

London, UK (November 2010); Self-taught Romanian designer Belinda Liu will return to London Fashion Week to present her new A/W 11 collection in February 2011 at the luxurious Charing Cross Hotel.

Having studied music, art and foreign languages, Liu, born in Romania to a Chinese father and Romanian mother, first realised her love for fashion design whilst studying in China. Her new-found passion of sketching endless designs prompted her to launch her self-titled label ‘Belinda Liu’ in 2009.

Liu has since successfully shown at Bucharest Fashion Week and most recently in London at the ‘A La Mode’ International London Fashion Week Show.

Last season saw Liu present her Spring/Summer 11 collection entitled “La Marquise de Sade”. Based around the concept of a modern Marie Antoinette and shown to a packed house of industry professionals, Liu expressed “Showcasing in London opened the doors to some important projects in Romania and was also a good step towards global recognition for the label.”

December 2010 will see Liu present her first Bridal collection in Bucharest consisting of beautiful handmade embroidery detailing and complementing lingerie. Fabrics used throughout her collections include satin, lace, organdy and silk.

LGN Events director Yolande expressed “We are extremely happy and excited about Belinda’s new collection and return to London Fashion Week. Last season she produced a strong show stopping collection which was well received here in London, generating a lot of interest in her label.”

Attracting fashion press and buyers alike, Belinda will be presenting her ultra-feminine yet daring designs at the “A La Mode” show hosted by LGN Events on Saturday 19th February 2011

Jean Yu Debuts Design Collaborations with Proenza Schouler and Rag&Bone at NY Fashion Week Spring 2011

(New York, NY)— Spring 2011 is a season of debuts for Jean Yu, whose designs include both ready-to-wear dresses and lingerie. The eponymous line attracts a circle of insiders including editors of high fashion glossies and, most recently, the design houses of rag & bone and Proenza Schouler. Yu collaborated with both lines for their respective runway presentations at New York Fashion Week. The limited edition designs are now available for sale and will hang with both ready-to-wear collections.  The collaborative pieces are available as separate labels, titled Jean Yu x Proenza Schouler and Jean Yu + Rag&Bone.

Proenza Schouler design duo Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough invited Yu to work with them after falling in love with her classic triangle bra, calling it “the most beautiful lingerie” they’ve ever seen. The transition from Yu’s eponymous lingerie to Proenza Schouler’s ready-to-wear runway collection was, in a word, seamless. The two designers are akin in terms of refined luxury and client base, so Yu’s lingerie was easily incorporated with Proenza Schouler’s ladylike suits. New colors and materials provided a fluorescent spin on Yu’s classically minimalist designs. Yu gives kudos to the stylists, as she felt like she was seeing her bras for the first time.

“The collaboration with rag & bone required me to go outside my norm,” Yu says of the designs that she built from the ground up for designers Marcus Wainwright and David Neville.  Using fighter pilots in g-suits as inspiration, Yu used two-inch webbing material to create bold, utilitarian harness-strap designs to complement the military-inspired collection. This challenged Yu to channel a rugged sensibility that directly contrasts Yu’s design signature: refined construction using the most delicate fabrics. “The designs for the rag & bone show functioned as accessories, less as lingerie- as originally intended.”

“It’s like a funhouse. Everything is double, double, double,” Yu says of the collaborations: double male design teams, double runway shows, and double front-row appearances by Anna Wintour.

All three designers have been selected as finalists for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund—Jean Yu in 2005, rag & bone in 2006 and Proenza Schouler winning first place in 2004.

The designer is debuting yet another line called 180 by Jean Yu, aptly named for its complete departure from her first line.  Whereas her designs were once quite delicate, decadent and high-maintenance, 180 is a capsule collection of simple, effortless items.  Sales and appointment are available at The News Inc, 495 Broadway, Telephone (212) 925-9700 x103.

About Jean Yu: Jean Yu is a designer based in New York. Since her graduation from F.I.T. in 1990, her designs have been carried by high-end retailers and graced the cover of American Vogue and Vanity Fair.  In 2005, Jean Yu was a CFDA/Vogue fashion fund finalist, and was named Designer of the Year by Seoul Lotte Avenue L, Korea, in 2007.  Yu has been featured in the 2007 “New York Fashion Now” exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and several of her dress designs were featured throughout a recent exhibition titled “American Beauty,” celebrating innovative designers at the F.I.T. museum.  More information about the designer can be found at www.jeanyu.com.

New Trend…No Pants?

Leave it to Gaga to start a new trend..it seems pantless bodysuits are the new thing in Hollywood. Celebs like Fergie to Christina Aguilera have been spotted in this getup, mostly in their music videos, but Gaga ain’t afraid to rock it on the red carpet…or anywhere for that matter. This trend is huge on the runways as well.

I mean, it’s basically like wearing a one piece bathing suit. I don’t think I’d actually sport this trend though, unless maybe I was on a tropical vacation, complete with an oversized hat and black sunglasses, eating brunch overlooking the beach at a posh resort. I think it would fit in that scenario.

Tell me, what do you think of going pantless?

Um, is that all she wears? She does have the legs for it though…

Fashion Designer Alexander McQueen Commits Suicide

I wanted to talk about how happy I was that I surpassed 1,000,000 hits on my blog, (thank you readers), but I am going to post a tribute instead to Alexander McQueen.

British fashion designer, Alexander McQueen, was found dead this morning in his London apartment at the young age of 40, of what seems to be an apparent suicide. There are no details yet except that the UK Daily is reporting that he hung himself. This comes only a week after his mother has passed and just three years after his close friend, Isabella Blow who discovered him, committed suicide.

A statement has been released on his website which can be seen here: http://www.alexandermcqueen.com/.

McQueen is known for his flamboyancy and outrageous designs that adored the likes of super stylish celebs such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga. McQueen received recognition from Queen Elizabeth II in 2003, when she made him a Commander of the British Empire for his fashion leadership. He has won countless awards and recognition since then for his dramatic designs and made a huge impact on the fashion industry as a whole. He was extremely talented, and wasn’t afraid to take risks within his work.

McQueen died only days before London Fashion Week, although he was not scheduled to show in the British capital. This news has come to a shock to many and we are deeply saddened by his loss. Check out some of his famous work below.

Rest in Peace, Alexander McQueen!

Lady Gaga Fresh Off the Runway in Jean Paul Gaultier

To think, where can you wear hot couture like Jean Paul Gaultier, really? Lady Gaga shows us that the red carpet is the perfect place to strut around in high fashion pieces such as this lavender bubble silk corset. This corset is from the 2009 Gaultier Paris Couture.  Gaga even sported a similiar teased, cropped curly hairstyle as the runway model, minus the pink extensions at the 2009 VMA’s. Not sure if I favor the mid-calf, sequined boots over strappy silver stilettos. I’d rather see the boots with funky black cut-out stockings or leggings instead for a more rockstar look.

The material looks as though it would be very comfortable against the skin might I add.
